Penny Power Ponders what does identity truly mean?

Over the summer, one topic loomed large for me: identity.

What does identity truly mean, and when does it create unnecessary heartache and pressure?

Reflecting on the past is a way that I often ground myself, I like to consider the era before the internet and my father’s early career days (he was born in 1927), I ponder what identity meant then compared to now, did anyone care about ‘my dad’s identity’ or were his deeper talents and his personality that helped him achieve his financial needs for his family.

Recently, Thomas and I discussed our identities during a profound lunch in a French beach restaurant. We reminisced about our early days pioneering the first global social network 1998, navigating chaos and fame, and the intense impact on our personal and emotional lives. We didn’t fully grasp the influence of fleeting fame—something many young achievers in various fields experience.

Returning home, we dined with friends who connected us to deeper thoughts on life. A powerful statement emerged from our conversation: “God loves us too much to feed our false identity.” This struck a chord with me and whether you believe in God or another higher energy, I am sure you can ponder these words and find meaning for yourself.

What is our false identity?

For years, my identity was tied to material success and my public persona as an entrepreneur, author, and community builder. This identity felt false, linked more to labels than to my true self.

My genuine identity lies in my love, care, and desire to solve challenges for others—far removed from my business persona. Understanding this helps me focus daily on contentment through all the beautiful interactions I have, rather than striving for an unsustainable image.

In today’s social media-driven world, the pressure to be seen and succeed can distort our identity, tying peace and contentment to external validation. As we re-enter the hustle of visibility, remember that you are more than your material image, bank account, or possessions. What truly resonates with others is the real you: your character, intentions, and authenticity. By focusing on these truths, not only can your personal life flourish, but your professional endeavours can grow from a place of sincerity and pride.

I have written this article to encourage us all to feel happier being real to ourselves, if not to the world. Ideally, we would be comfortable about ourselves to the level that we let everyone see who we really are, but at the very least, let yourself see who you really are.

This week, take a moment to reflect on your true identity and how you can express it authentically in every facet of your life.
